Start at the Filter and Sump
Standing water after a completed cycle almost always begins at the filter. Food and grease build on the fine screen, and when flow slows the pump cannot clear the tub in the drain step. Remove the filter assembly, rinse both screens, and scoop any debris out of the sump below. A small amount of clean water in the sump is normal and keeps the seal wet; a full pool of dirty water is not.
Air Gap and Disposer Plug
If your kitchen has an air gap fitting on the counter, unscrew the cap and clear any sludge inside, because a blocked air gap backs water up into the machine. The other frequent culprit shows up after sink plumbing work: when a garbage disposer is installed, the drain knockout plug inside the disposer inlet must be removed. Left in place, it seals the drain path completely and the dishwasher has nowhere to send its water. We see this often in Loveland-area remodels.
The Drain Hose
The drain hose runs from the pump up to a high loop and over to the disposer or drain. Check it for a sharp kink behind the cabinet, and feel for a soft clog where it connects. The high loop matters: it keeps sink water from siphoning back into the tub. A hose that has slipped or been crushed during a nearby install will stop drainage even when the pump is healthy.
When It Is the Pump
If the filter, air gap, disposer plug, and hose are all clear and the tub still will not empty, the drain pump itself is the likely cause. The pump can fail electrically or jam on a small hard object like a bit of glass or a fruit pit. This is where a diagnosis pays off, because the correct Cove pump is fitted and tested rather than guessed at. Running repeated cycles against a failed pump will not clear it and can overflow the sump.
